More Than 80 Years of Education, Prevention, and Impact

Since 1943, LifeSmart Youth has helped Indiana youth gain the knowledge and skills they need to make healthy, safe, and informed decisions.

Our name, programs, and approach have evolved throughout the decades as the needs of young people have changed. What has remained constant is our belief that education and prevention can have a lasting impact on the lives of youth, families, and communities.

Our Beginning: 1943

LifeSmart Youth was founded in Indianapolis in 1943 as the Social Hygiene Association. The organization was created during a time when communities were becoming increasingly concerned about public health and sexually transmitted infections.

Our earliest work focused on providing accurate health information and helping prevent the spread of disease through education. From the beginning, the organization recognized something that continues to guide our work today: knowledge can lead to healthier choices and healthier communities.

Expanding Our Focus

As public health challenges changed, the organization grew beyond its original focus.

Over the following decades, programming expanded to address the health and developmental needs of children and adolescents. Education increasingly focused on topics such as puberty, reproductive health, pregnancy and sexually transmitted infection prevention, and responsible decision-making.

Schools became an important partner in this work, allowing trained educators to reach young people with accurate, age-appropriate information during critical stages of their development.

Becoming the Social Health Association of Indiana

As the organization's work expanded, so did its identity. The organization eventually became known as the Social Health Association of Indiana, reflecting a broader commitment to the health and well-being of young people throughout the state.

For decades, the Social Health Association partnered with Indiana schools, educators, parents, community organizations, and funders to make prevention education accessible to young people.

Programs continued to evolve as new challenges emerged and research provided a greater understanding of effective prevention education.

Growing Beyond Sexual Health Education

While reproductive and sexual health education remained an important part of our work, the needs of young people extended far beyond a single area of health.

Our programming expanded to include personal safety and child abuse prevention, bullying and cyberbullying, healthy relationships, consent, dating violence prevention, digital safety, and mental health and well-being.

This expansion allowed the organization to support students throughout different stages of childhood and adolescence—from elementary school through high school.

It also reinforced an important part of our approach: prevention education is most effective when young people receive information and skills before they encounter difficult situations.

Evidence-Based Prevention Education

Throughout our history, the organization has remained committed to providing education that is accurate, age-appropriate, and grounded in evidence.

Over time, LifeSmart Youth has incorporated nationally recognized and evidence-based curricula and developed programming to meet the needs of Indiana schools and communities.

Today, our programming includes:

  • Human Growth & Development – helping elementary and middle school students understand puberty, hygiene, development, and basic reproductive health.

  • Rights, Respect, Responsibility (3Rs) – providing middle and high school students with education on healthy relationships, communication, consent, and pregnancy and STI prevention.

  • Safe Dates – helping young people recognize and prevent dating violence while building skills for healthy relationships.

  • MBF Child Safety Matters® and After-School Safety Matters® – teaching children personal safety strategies related to abuse, bullying, cyberbullying, and digital safety.

  • Mental Health Essentials – building mental health literacy, reducing stigma, strengthening coping and resilience skills, and helping students recognize when they or someone they know should connect with a trusted adult.

  • Power Through Choices – providing comprehensive education designed specifically for youth involved in systems such as foster care and juvenile justice.

  • Adult and Parent Education – giving the adults who support young people information and tools to continue important conversations outside the classroom.

Responding to the Mental Health Needs of Young People

As youth mental health concerns increased across Indiana and the country, the organization recognized another critical opportunity for prevention.

LifeSmart Youth expanded its work to include Mental Health Essentials, providing students with education about mental health conditions, warning signs, coping strategies, stigma, resilience, and available support.

The addition of mental health education represented an important evolution in our history and reinforced our commitment to addressing the whole health and well-being of young people.

Serving Youth Across Indiana

What began as a public health organization in Indianapolis has grown into an organization serving schools and communities throughout Indiana.

Our health educators work directly with students in classrooms and community settings, partnering with schools to provide programming that complements the work of teachers, counselors, administrators, and families.

During the 2025–2026 school year alone, LifeSmart Youth reached 16,971 students across Indiana.

Our ability to grow has been made possible through decades of partnerships with schools, community organizations, foundations, government agencies, corporations, donors, volunteers, and individuals who believe in the importance of prevention education.

A New Name for Our Next Chapter

In 2026, after more than 80 years of service, the Social Health Association of Indiana became LifeSmart Youth.

The change was more than a new name.

Our former name represented an important part of our history, but it no longer fully communicated the breadth of what our organization had become. Our work now encompasses physical health, mental health, healthy relationships, personal safety, abuse prevention, and the practical skills young people need to navigate an increasingly complex world.

LifeSmart Youth better represents both the young people at the center of our mission and our commitment to equipping them with knowledge they can use throughout their lives.

Our new tagline captures that commitment:

Guiding youth to lead healthy and safe lives.

More Than 80 Years – and Still Evolving

The challenges facing young people today look very different from those facing youth when our organization began in 1943.

Our response has always been to evolve.

From public health and disease prevention to puberty education, reproductive health, healthy relationships, child safety, dating violence prevention, digital safety, and mental health education, each chapter of our history reflects our willingness to listen, learn, and respond to what young people need.

More than eight decades later, we continue to believe what our founders understood in 1943: giving people accurate information before a crisis occurs can change lives.

Today, LifeSmart Youth carries that legacy forward by giving Indiana youth the knowledge, confidence, and skills they need to make informed decisions, seek help when they need it, and lead healthy and safe lives.
